Odoo vs Zoho Books for UAE SMEs: which one to choose
An accounting app or a full ERP? We compare Odoo and Zoho Books on UAE VAT and corporate tax, e-invoicing, inventory, customisation, hosting, pricing and AI, and say which one fits which SME.
When a UAE SME outgrows spreadsheets or a basic invoicing tool, two names keep coming up: Odoo and Zoho Books. Both handle UAE VAT, both run in the cloud, both can get you to e-invoicing compliance. They are not the same kind of product, and that difference decides the choice.
KENOBIZ implements Odoo and remains a Zoho expert.
The short answer
- Choose Odoo if you hold stock, import and resell, manufacture, run several companies, or want sales, operations and accounting in one system. That covers most growing SMEs.
- Choose Zoho Books if you sell services, your needs are invoicing, expenses and VAT, and you already work with other Zoho apps.
Scope: an accounting app vs a full ERP
Zoho Books is an online accounting application, part of the wider Zoho family. It covers quotes, invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, VAT and financial reports. A full CRM, advanced inventory or HR live in other Zoho apps (Zoho CRM, Zoho Inventory, Zoho People), each a separate application connected to Books.
Odoo is a full ERP: accounting, invoicing, CRM, sales, inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, point of sale, projects, HR and website on one database. Confirming a sale order creates the delivery, then the invoice and the journal entry, with nothing to synchronise between apps.
So for pure accounting, compare Zoho Books with Odoo Accounting. As soon as you need operations, compare Odoo with Zoho Books plus the other Zoho apps you would add.
UAE VAT and corporate tax
Both tools handle UAE VAT at the 5% standard rate, with tax invoices and VAT reporting.
Odoo ships an official UAE localisation (Odoo 19): l10n_ae for the chart of accounts and taxes, l10n_ae_reports for the VAT return in the FTA's VAT201 format and a corporate tax report, and l10n_ae_pos for point-of-sale receipts. Invoices can carry Arabic as a second language, with tax invoices for B2B and simplified tax invoices for B2C. One point to plan: the corporate tax report needs your accounts to be classified, and none is configured by default. Do it at setup, so the 9% corporate tax on taxable income above AED 375,000 is prepared from clean data. Our page on UAE accounting and VAT in Odoo details the setup.
Zoho Books has a UAE edition built around VAT: local tax rates, tax invoices and VAT reporting. For corporate tax, check with your accountant how your chart of accounts maps to taxable income, whichever tool you use.
On VAT alone, the two are level for a service business. Odoo goes further when VAT must stay consistent across sales, purchases, stock and point of sale.
E-invoicing: built-in provider vs free choice
Zoho is an accredited service provider. Zoho Software Trading LLC is on the Ministry of Finance's list of accredited service providers. For a Zoho Books user, e-invoicing can stay inside the Zoho ecosystem: one vendor for the software and the transmission. It is the shortest path for a business already on Books.
Odoo is not an ASP. It produces the structured invoices and connects, through a connector available for recent versions, to any of the 65 accredited providers on the list. That is one more component to configure and maintain, and real freedom in return: you choose your ASP on price, connector quality and support, and you can change provider without changing ERP. Our page on UAE e-invoicing with Odoo explains the setup.
The deadlines are the same either way. Below AED 50 million of revenue: ASP by 31 March 2027, go-live on 1 July 2027. Full details in our guide UAE e-invoicing 2026-2027: what SMEs must do.
Inventory and operations
This is the widest gap. Odoo Inventory is a full warehouse system: several warehouses and locations, routes, lots and serial numbers, replenishment rules, with native links to purchasing, manufacturing and point of sale. With automated stock valuation, every stock move posts straight to the accounts.
Zoho Books tracks items and stock. Deeper inventory features depend on the plan or on Zoho Inventory, and manufacturing is outside the scope of an accounting app.
If your margin depends on stock (trading, distribution, retail, light manufacturing), Odoo is the stronger choice.
Customisation
Zoho Books offers custom fields, workflow rules and custom functions written in Deluge, Zoho's scripting language.
Odoo offers Odoo Studio to add fields, screens, reports and automations without code (Custom plan), custom modules in Python for anything specific, and an external API (Custom plan). On Odoo Online you are limited to Studio; custom modules need Odoo.sh or your own server.
Hosting, data and lock-in
Zoho Books is SaaS only, on Zoho's cloud. You can export your data, but the software, its logic and your configuration stay with Zoho.
Odoo gives you three options: Odoo Online (SaaS), Odoo.sh (a cloud platform for customised projects) or your own server. There is also a free, open-source Community edition, with limited accounting. You can change integrator, host or ASP without rebuilding your system.
Pricing
Odoo (public prices on odoo.com, October 2026, USD):
- One App Free: one app, unlimited users, on Odoo Online.
- Standard: all apps, from USD 31.10 per user per month (USD 24.90 for the first 12 months), Odoo Online only.
- Custom: all apps plus Studio, multi-company, external API and the hosting of your choice (Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on-premise), from USD 61 per user per month (USD 49 for the first 12 months). Odoo.sh hosting is billed separately.
For 10 users: USD 311 per month on Standard, USD 610 on Custom, all apps included, before first-year discounts.
Zoho Books pricing depends on the plan you choose. Check current UAE prices on Zoho Books' pricing page.
Compare like for like: a Zoho Books plan against Odoo's One App Free or Standard for accounting only; Odoo's all-apps price against Zoho Books plus the other Zoho apps when you need CRM and inventory too. Implementation, data migration and training weigh as much as licences.
AI
Odoo 19 introduced AI agents that learn from your documents and perform actions, AI fields and AI server actions, plus vendor bill digitisation with OCR and AI. Odoo 19.1 lets you ask questions about a file in preview, and 19.3 lets an AI agent create records, including from an uploaded instruction file. More on our Odoo and AI page.
Zoho has its own assistant, Zia, across its applications. The difference comes back to scope: in Odoo, an AI agent works on sales, stock and accounting in the same database.

The verdict
When Odoo wins
- You hold stock, import and resell, or manufacture.
- You run several companies, for example a mainland company and a free zone company, and want one system.
- You want CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, point of sale and accounting without synchronisation.
- You want to choose, and change, your e-invoicing provider freely.
That is the profile of most growing SMEs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Our Odoo for UAE SMEs page gives the full picture.
When Zoho Books is enough
- You sell services: consulting, agency work, training, professional services.
- Your needs are invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation and VAT.
- You already run Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps, and your team is comfortable with them.
- You want e-invoicing handled by the same vendor as your accounting.
In that case, stay on Zoho Books: switching would cost more than it brings. We support Zoho too.
Moving from Zoho Books to Odoo
If you started on Zoho Books and now hold stock or run several entities, customers, suppliers, products, chart of accounts and open balances can be migrated, with go-live at a period end. Our migration to Odoo page explains the method. Schedule it before your e-invoicing deadline.

FAQ
Is Zoho Books ready for UAE e-invoicing?
Zoho is on the Ministry of Finance list of accredited service providers (Zoho Software Trading LLC), so a Zoho Books user can handle e-invoicing within the Zoho ecosystem. Check the setup and the cost for your plan with Zoho.
Can Odoo handle UAE e-invoicing without being an ASP?
Yes. Odoo produces the invoices and connects to an accredited ASP through a connector available for recent versions. You choose the provider among those on the official list.
Which one costs less?
It depends on scope. For accounting only, compare plans on your own user count. Once you need inventory, CRM and accounting together, compare Odoo's all-apps price with the total of the separate apps you would need.
Is Odoo Community enough for a UAE SME?
Community is free and open source, but its accounting is limited. For VAT returns and e-invoicing, a UAE SME is better served by the Standard or Custom plan.
