AI chatbot or voice assistant: where to start in 2026?
Both technologies are mature, but they serve different needs. Here's how to choose between an AI chatbot and an AI voice assistant for your SME — and how to combine them.
Two questions come up regularly with my Dubai SME clients: "Should we put an AI chatbot on our site?" and "We hear about AI receptionists — is that for us?"
Both technologies are mature. Both are accessible cost-wise. But they serve very different needs. Here's how I distinguish them concretely.
The business chatbot: capture and qualify on your site
A business AI chatbot — like Kenobot I design for clients — lives on your website. Its job:
- Monitor who visits, on what pages, for how long
- Engage conversation at the right moment (e.g. beyond 30 seconds on a product page)
- Answer common questions in multiple languages
- Qualify the visitor (budget, urgency, type of need)
- Capture contact details and log them in your CRM
- Schedule an appointment directly in your calendar
- Transfer to a human if conversation becomes complex
The ideal virtual employee for sites with decent traffic but a sales team too small to respond to every visitor in real time.
The AI voice assistant: never miss a call
The AI voice assistant lives on your phone line. Its job:
- Pick up 24/7 (never busy, never out-of-hours)
- Have a natural conversation with the caller (voice indistinguishable from human)
- Qualify the call (urgency, topic, caller identity)
- Book an appointment directly in your calendar
- Capture contact details in your CRM
- Transfer to a human if caller requests
The answer to the 30% of inbound calls a typical SME loses because it's too small to have a full-time receptionist.
Differentiation table
| Criterion | Business chatbot | AI voice assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Website (chat) | Phone |
| Interaction type | Text | Voice |
| Availability | 24/7 | 24/7 |
| Multilingual | Yes (all languages) | Yes (major ones) |
| Simultaneous capacity | Hundreds of conversations | Effectively unlimited |
| Typical setup cost | 5,000-30,000 USD | 5,000-20,000 USD |
| Usage cost | Monthly flat rate | Per-minute (~0.4 USD/min) |
| Audience reached | Website visitors | Phone callers |
How to choose: 3 questions
1. Where do your prospects arrive today?
If most prospects find you via Google, browse your site, but never cross to the contact form → chatbot priority.
If your prospects call your number directly (offline advertising, word-of-mouth, phone-dominant sectors like luxury real estate or healthcare) → voice priority.
2. Which channel is losing you the most leads today?
Run this test this week:
- How many missed calls (check your telecom statements)?
- How many unique site visitors (Google Analytics) who don't contact you?
The channel with biggest loss pool deserves first investment.
3. What contact mode do your clients prefer?
On some markets (Dubai real estate, services to individuals, restaurants), clients call. On others (B2B services, professional practices, e-commerce), they write.
Ask yourself what your clients prefer.
Both together: the synergy
Real power emerges when both work together. A visitor arrives on your site, the chatbot engages, qualifies interest, proposes a callback. The callback is handled by your AI voice assistant (or a human if available). No lead falls through cracks.
It's precisely the model I implement for Dubai clients when volume justifies both channels.
Pitfalls to avoid
Too-generic chatbot: an off-the-shelf ChatGPT bot not trained on your business produces vague answers that frustrate visitors. Always prefer a custom-trained chatbot on your knowledge base.
Unnatural voice assistant: 2020-era robotic voices scared clients off. 2026 voices are indistinguishable from human. Test the voice before deploying.
No human transfer: an AI agent that never hands off to a human eventually frustrates. Always plan an escape door.
No monitoring: without conversation tracking, you'll never know where your AI derails. Plan a supervision dashboard from day one.
Real cost
For a Dubai SME, realistic ranges:
Custom business chatbot (Kenobot style):
- Setup: 18,000-80,000 AED based on complexity
- Monthly subscription: 1,000-6,000 AED
AI voice assistant:
- Setup: 14,000-50,000 AED
- Usage cost: ~1.5 AED/minute
- For 200 minutes monthly traffic: ~300 AED
Both together: count 35,000-120,000 AED setup, 2,500-10,000 AED/month subscription.
Conclusion
Business chatbot or AI voice assistant — not an opposition question. A sequence and priority question. Start by identifying which channel is losing you most prospects today, attack that one first.
